A dental implant is a valuable and much more convenient alternative to replace your missing teeth. This involves placing a titanium implant into the bone where the root of the tooth was. This provides anchorage for a crown up the top.
Dental implant is a significant advancement in dentistry over the last 40 years. Research shows that implants placed that long ago are still functioning well and are healthy. An implant nullifies the hassle of a removable denture in the mouth giving you a higher usability, aesthetic and confidence.
This is a good option for those cases where teeth have either been extracted, lost due to complications from dental trauma or where the tooth has become weak to keep. There are certain criteria to see if an implant is a viable option for your case.
The treatment option, its process and cost will be thoroughly discussed with you at the consultation appointment.
Posterior implants: We are placing more implants in the posterior areas of the jaws so long as there is sufficient volume and quality of bone. Sometimes these can be placed at the same time the tooth is extracted – an immediate implant. At times some graft material I necessary to build up the volume of bone.
A crown will be necessary on the implant but not until we see evidence that the bone has grown onto the implant - osseointegration. Recently we have been doing immediate molar teeth implant replacements. Molar teeth generally have multiple roots
Success and longevity of dental implants depends on many factors including the patients health, oral hygiene, the degree of biting forces and the use of tobacco, alcohol, drugs and sugar. The amount of quality bone is also an important factor and in some cases the use of a bone substitute or regenerative membrane (graft) would be necessary.
As with any surgery there is a risk of bleeding, swelling and infection in the area. There is also a risk that the bone does not integrate with the implant. 5% of Dental Implants may not integrate but this is generally apparent within the first 3 months.
